William O. PORTER

William O. Porter died Saturday night at 7:00 o'clock at his home on Freeze Street of ptomaine poison, after an illness of twelve days, his condition having been critical for several days.  However, it was not generally known that he was seriously ill and the news of his death came as a shock to his many friends in this city and county.  Mr. Porter was 46 years of age, having been born in Stanly county on July 25, 1878.  He had lived on Freeze Street for about 30 years, coming to this city with his parents while still a youth.  He was married several years ago to Miss Beulah Phillips.  The deceased had been an active member of the McGill Street Baptist Church for a number of years and funeral services were held in the church yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. R. Pentuff.  Interment was made in Oakwood cemetery.  Surviving are one brother, Watt Porter, of Concord; and two sisters, Mrs. N. M. Byrd, and Mrs. Will Swarengen, both of Albemarle.   Source: "Death Here Saturday of William O. Porter," The Concord Daily Tribune, 29 June 1925, digital images, North Carolina Digital Heritage Center (http://www.digitalnc.org/collections/newspapers : accessed 14 September 2019).
