Jennie DAVIS

"Aunt" Jennie Davis, a well known and much respected colored woman of Harrisburg, died last Tuesday of heart trouble.  She was the mother of 15 children, and was highly respected by all the white people.  We regret to note the death  of such a darkey, as her kind is getting very scarse.   Source: "Concord and Cabarrus County," Carolina Watchman, 1 August 1906, digital images, North Carolina Digital Heritage Center (http://www.digitalnc.org/collections/newspapers : accessed 12 October 2019).

Monroe DOVE

Mr. Monroe Dove passed away Saturday evening at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. R. A. Barringer, near Cold Springs, in No. 9 township.  The remains were interred at Cold Springs M. E. church Sunday evening.  Mr. Dove was a good citizen, a warn hearted friend and a devoted member of the Methodist church.  He died in the triumphs of the faith that marked a noble life.  He had passed the allotted three score and ten years, allotted to man.  He had passed the seventy-sixth year.  He had suffered a kidney malady for many years.  Having been bereaved of his life companion some six or eight years ago his feeble condition was the less bearable and he abandoned his home some weeks ago and consigned himself to the care of affectionate children and died surrounded with all that could contribute to his happiness.   Source: "The Reaper Death," The Daily Concord Standard, 20 April 1897, digital images, North Carolina Digital Heritage Center (http://www.digitalnc.org/collections/newspapers : accessed 22 October 2017).

Mary DUSENBERY

At seven minutes past 10 o'clock this (Tuesday) morning Miss Mary Dusenbery, postmistress of Concord, died at her residence on Depot street.  It was not generally known that she was seriously ill.  All that medical skill could do for her was done, in addition to the close attention of fond friends.  Miss Dusenbery's death is a severe shock to the entire community.  For twenty years she has been postmistress at this place, and her record in the discharge of the duties secured a reappointment with every succeeding administration   Source: "Concord and Cabarrus County," Carolina Watchman, 13 November 1907, digital images, Chronicling America (http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov : accessed 26 October 2019).
